
They Say Defense Wins Championships and the winners of the HDNYC CHSAA Defensive Player of the Year award are an example of that. All players proven to be the best defender on their team and displayed big defensive performances to lead their team in some key games this past season. All three players are City champions and have left their mark on their programs.
HDNYC CHSAA AA Defensive POY : Adonis Ratliff- 7-0 Forward Archbishop Stepinac
Despite missing some of the season due injury, Adonis 1/2 of the crusaders Twin Towers front court was first in voting thanks to his impact on the defensive end during the post season that helped the Crusaders accomplish the goal of winning their 4th CHSAA championship. In that game where he went off for 21 points 8 boards and 4 blocks in 28 minutes of play. Not many players can come back from an injury during the season and be the key defensive presence in a historical championship run .
HDNYC CHSAA A Division Defensive POY: Daquan Bryant – St. John’s Prep
There’s no question that “soulfood” was one of the best on ball defenders in the city regardless of league. The 5-8 guard is an a opposing point guards nightmare turning steals into transition points. Bryant’s defense is one of the keys to the Red Storm’s second straight championship run this season.
CHSAA Division B Defensive POY: Prescott Owens – Cathedral Prep
The 6-1 junior guard defensive prowess was as huge key in Cathedral’s City and State Catholic Championship run. Owens in his first season in varsity recorded multiple steals in several games throughout the regular season and had his best defensive performance in the City championship game where he recorded six steals in the comeback win over Kennedy Catholic.
